Sabu the African Gray today decided oysters fried in olive oil and Benecol (which tastes like butter, but is actually good for health www.benecol.com/index.jhtml ) are worthy of bright-eyed head bobbing, much excitement, and delighted cries of "Want some treat!" I am unsure if it is the oysters, olive oil, Benecol, or the combination thereof about which she is so avid, but she rarely becomes this excited about a treat. Fried oysters and African Grays -who knew?

Re: New favorite treat: fried oysters
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 12:55 PMAre oysters ok for parrots? Also, are you taking care not to give the bird too much fat in general? I personally would maybe give one a day at most.

Re: New favorite treat: fried oysters
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 2:36 PMHi! Captain Buzzkill here! Before I responded to your posting, I trolled my list of parrot experts about oysters and fats in a parrot's diet. I had some concerns but wanted to see if I was just being a worrywart or not.
A worrywart I was not.
An occasional small piece of fried oyster (once a month, no more than once a week) might be OK.
The concerns:
1) Oysters are sponges for environmental toxins, man-made (heavy metals, PCBs) and biological (red algae comes to mind), even if they are farm-raised. Pacific Coast oysters, natural and farmed, and better off than their East Coast or foreign cousins.
2) Oysters are high in cholesterol, zinc, selenium, and, on the plus side, Omega 3's. They are NOT a naturally-occuring food for African Grey parrots, so their long term effects are unknown.
3) Any added fat in a parrot's diet is NOT a good thing, even mono-unsaturated and "safe" fats. Calories are calories. heck, parrots on an all-seed diet rich in "good" fats frequently suffer (and perish) from fatty liver disease.
Bottom line OPINION: do what you want, but oysters are a HUGE question mark, and the fats they are cooked in are a known hazard for pet birds.
Even canned tuna (sea food in general) has a problem for humans in regards to mercury and PCB contamination, which seems to be worldwide.
Some of the safest fish is Alaskan WILD salmon, and it is packed with Omega 3 fatty acids. I give my flock poached, fresh salmon when I have it. -

Re: New favorite treat: fried oysters
Fri, October 26, 2007 - 6:56 PMGood to know!
It has been about a year since I last fried up oysters and will probably be another year til the next time, so Herself is probably not in peril from fried oyster treats per se, yet I will be more sparing with the fats allowed to her in general from the dinner plate. She loves rib-eye steak trimmings, for example. My 18 year old Shih Tzu gets all the rib-eye steak, friend oysters, and anything else he wants since he is losing weight daily, is so damn old he can hardly stand up any more, and just generally deserves to be entirely spoiled but Sabu is only 16 years old with a long haul ahead of her, I hope, so instead of being a disreputable pirate bird swigging rum and raucously squawking "Pieces of Eight!" she may eventually feel like her fate has instead been to fall into the clutches of Puritans or, even worse, conscientious macrobiotic Vegans. The horror, the horror... living a v-e-r-y long life but doomed to eating a diet of only beansprouts and similarly healthy stuff. Nah, being a libertine bird after my own heart she will get a piece of fried oyster once a year and a bit of rib-eye every now and then even if we do both die at 85 instead of 95 years old.
Seriously, I do appreciate the info and will strive to follow the middle way with her, though the whole devil-may-care pirate bird image is just so sassy. -
